About XZK SiC-Mullite Brick

SiC-mullite brick — also known as high-alumina silicon carbide brick — is the answer to a specific economic question: how do you get most of silicon carbide’s abrasion resistance across a large lining area without paying for a full SiC body?

The Economic Argument

Silicon carbide is expensive. On a lining course where the duty is moderate, the extra life it buys often costs more than it saves. But plain high-alumina brick may not have enough abrasion resistance. SiC-mullite occupies the middle ground: silicon carbide additions raise surface hardness and wear resistance, while the alumina-mullite matrix keeps the material at a fraction of the cost of a nitride-bonded SiC body.

Over a large stack area or a long kiln transition zone, that difference per ton compounds into a significant number — which is why this grade is specified far more often than its modest datasheet would suggest.

What It Does and Does Not Do

It gives you abrasion resistance, decent refractoriness under load (to 1650 °C on XZK-GM1650) and reasonable thermal shock behaviour (10–12 cycles at 1100 °C water quench). It does not give you the thermal conductivity of a SiC body, and it does not give you nitride-level alkali resistance. Those are the properties you pay for when the zone genuinely needs them.

Being clear about this boundary is the whole point: over-specifying a large area with a premium grade is one of the most common ways refractory budgets are wasted, and under-specifying the bosh is one of the most common ways campaigns are shortened. Knowing which is which is the specification job.

Grade Selection

  • XZK-GM1650 — 65% Al₂O₃, RUL 1650 °C, density 2.65 g/cm³. Hottest courses.
  • XZK-GM1600 — 63% Al₂O₃, RUL 1600 °C, CCS ≥90 MPa. General duty.
  • XZK-GM1550 — 60% Al₂O₃, RUL 1550 °C, thermal shock 12 cycles. Cooler or more heavily cycled zones.

Note that GM1550 carries the best thermal shock rating despite the lowest RUL — where cycling dominates rather than peak temperature, it is often the correct pick.

Supply and Documentation

Minimum order 10 metric tons for standard shapes (7–14 days) and 20 metric tons for custom shapes (20–35 days). Bulk density and porosity per ASTM C830, crushing strength per ASTM C133, RUL per ISO 1893, thermal shock cycles and chemistry are tested per batch, with a Certificate of Analysis on every shipment. Matching mortar is available so that the joint does not become the weak point.

Where This Grade Sits in the Lining System

Silicon carbide and carbon grades are selected for what they do with heat rather than for what they resist. Thermal conductivity decides whether the cooling system ever sees the load, and the bonding system decides how long the material survives alkali attack and oxidation once it does.

XZK supplies sic-mullite brick as one zone of a zoned package rather than as a standalone item: the grades normally zoned alongside it — among them si₃n₄ bonded sic brick — are documented on the silicon carbide and carbon refractories page, and the vessel-level architecture — where each zone starts and ends, and which mechanism actually limits the campaign — is set out on the blast furnace page.

The MMK Magnitogorsk No.10 BF and 375 t ladle programme reference documents how this class of material performed in full service, with the measured campaign figures rather than datasheet values.

Advantages of Choosing XZK SiC-Mullite Brick

Abrasion Resistance Without Full SiC Cost

Silicon carbide additions raise surface hardness and abrasion resistance substantially, but the mullite-bearing alumina matrix keeps the material far more economical than a full SiC body — which matters over large stack areas.

Mullite Toughness Under Cycling

The mullite phase brings lower thermal expansion and better shock behaviour than a comparable plain high-alumina brick, rated at 10–12 cycles at 1100 °C water quench.

Refractoriness Under Load to 1650 °C

XZK-GM1650 carries RUL at 1650 °C, which covers the majority of stack, bosh backup and kiln transition duties without stepping up to a premium grade.

Good Value Across Large Areas

Where the zone is large and the duty moderate, saving on material cost per ton across the whole area is usually worth more than squeezing extra life out of one course.

Specific Applications of SiC-Mullite Brick

Proven performance across diverse heavy industrial thermal equipment.

Blast Furnace Stack & Bosh Backup

Stack courses exposed to burden abrasion and moderate temperature, and backup courses behind the working lining.

Hot Blast Stove & Regenerator Courses

Moderate-temperature courses where abrasion and cycling coexist.

Cement & Lime Kilns

Transition zones, tertiary air ducts and cooler sections where abrasion governs — a classic high-alumina SiC duty.

Reheating Furnace Hearths & Skids

Abrasion-resistant courses subject to billet and slab movement.

Over 75% of our international steel and kiln clients continue multi-year long-term procurement partnerships.

For the stack area the volume is large, so material cost per ton matters as much as life. This grade gave us the right balance.

Frequently Asked Engineering Questions

Click any question to expand; only one answer is shown at a time.

What is SiC-mullite brick, and how does it differ from Si₃N₄-bonded SiC?+

SiC-mullite (also called high-alumina silicon carbide) is an alumina-rich body with silicon carbide additions and a mullite-bearing matrix. Si₃N₄-bonded SiC is a silicon-carbide-dominant body with a nitride bond. The SiC-mullite material has lower thermal conductivity and lower abrasion resistance, but costs substantially less — which makes it the right choice for large, moderately loaded areas.

When should I step up to a full SiC grade?+

When thermal conductivity becomes the controlling property — typically the bosh and belly, where heat must be moved into the cooling system — or where alkali attack and abrasion are severe. In the stack and in backup courses, SiC-mullite is usually the better economic decision.

How do I choose between GM1650, GM1600 and GM1550?+

Grade by zone temperature: GM1650 (RUL 1650 °C) for the hottest courses, GM1550 (RUL 1550 °C) for cooler zones. Note that GM1550 has the best thermal shock rating at 12 cycles, so where cycling dominates rather than temperature, it can outperform its nominal grade.

Is this suitable for cement kiln transition zones?+

Yes — abrasion resistance plus thermal shock tolerance is exactly what those zones require, and it is a well-established high-alumina SiC application.

What is the MOQ and lead time?+

10 metric tons for standard shapes in 7–14 days; 20 metric tons for custom shapes in 20–35 days including tooling.

What test data is supplied?+

Bulk density and apparent porosity per ASTM C830, cold crushing strength per ASTM C133, refractoriness under load per ISO 1893, thermal shock cycles, and chemical analysis per GB/T 6900 and GB/T 16555. Batch COA ships with every lot.

Can you supply matching mortar?+

Yes, supplied to match the brick grade so the joint is not the weak point in the lining.

How is it packed?+

Palletised at 1.0–1.2 metric tons on ISPM-15 fumigated pallets with PE wrap and moisture-barrier liner.
